The publisher of Environmental Science & Engineering, Tom Davey, has been presented with the 2002 American Water Works Association Award of Merit. The citation, approved by the AWWA Board of Directors at its winter meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, reads:
For his leadership as a journalist and publisher who has championed the cause of safe drinking water through the principles of sound science. As editor and publisher of the widely read magazine, Environmental Science & Engineering, he has provided authoritative editorial coverage of Canada's municipal drinking water treatment and distribution systems.
The award, presented in London, Ontario, was also recognized at the AWWA annual conference in New Orleans, June 17.
Senator Tom Daschle, (D) Majority Leader of the US Senate, was the previous winner of this honour.
This is not Tom Davey's first international award. He was the first Canadian to win a J.H. Neal Award from American Business Press in New York, and later, the first Canadian to win the Schlenz Medal from the Washington-based Water Environment Federation. His other honours include the Harvey Southam Award, presented at the University of Toronto in 1965, two awards from Environment Canada, a Canadian Science Writers Association award, and several awards from Canadian Business Press.
Born in England, he has worked as a journalist in England, Australia and Canada. Many of his articles have covered life-threatening drinking water problems.
AWWA, founded in March 1881, is the largest organization of water supply professionals in the world. Some 57,000 members represent the drinking water community, ranging from scientists, engineers, environmentalists, academics, regulators, treatment plant operators, and others devoted to water supply and public health. Additionally, there are some 1,500 international members from 112 countries outside North America. Worth noting is the fact that AWWA preceded Greenpeace by a century.
AWWA initiated a Research Foundation in 1966. Since then, the Association has funded close to (US) $200 million for drinking water research. Environmental Science & Engineering is proud to be honoured by this distinguished body.
