Compliant lining material for domestic water storage tanks

One of the issues often overlooked in discussions about potable water quality, compliance and safety is the storage of domestic water. Pocono Fabricator's Pre-Krete Tankliner-61, a recently developed product designed exclusively for lining the inside of domestic water storage tanks, is now available and meets NSF Standard 61. NSF Standard 61 specifically ensures that drinking water contact materials and components will not add harmful levels of contaminants to drinking water.

NSF International, founded in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation, is known for the development of standards, product testing and certification in the areas of public health safety and protection of the environment. Canada's CSA International also approves products for use in potable water. They too have adopted NSF Standard 61 as their conformance criteria.

The Pre-Krete Tankliner-61 was developed in June 1999 as a lining for installation in hot and cold potable water tanks. It is a hydraulic cement formulated with a bauxite based binder, graded aggregate, and specialty ingredients designed to provide effective protection against the corrosive effects of hard and soft water. The specialty ingredients control water retention, compressive strength, set time, and workability, all of which ensure that the end product applies and performs as expected.

The sources for the graded aggregates are selected on the ability of the vendors to monitor the grain size of the aggregates as well as product purity. Most sand and/or stone supplies contain clay, lime, dirt, etc., all of which will be attacked in a corrosive environment. There is also concern that these aggregates may contain contaminants that are harmful when ingested. Many sand/ stone supplies contain lead and arsenic.

Tankliner-61 can be used to line new tanks or to repair and restore existing tanks. It can even be applied over a rusted surface provided there is no lamination of the oxidized metal. This eliminates the need for sandblasting, an expensive procedure when using epoxy-based tank liners.

Provincial Tank Lining and Inspections serves as the exclusive lining representative for Clemmer Technologies, a leading manufacturer of water storage tanks and other containment systems. Clemmer now installs only Tankliner- 61 linings in the new water storage tanks they fabricate in their factory in Waterloo, Ontario.
